Danny’s English Channel Swim for Hastings Lifeboat Station
After a heartfelt conversation with a close friend who has since passed away from cancer, Danny a member of Freedom Leisure felt inspired to take on a series of crazy endurance challenges to raise awareness and support for a range of vital charities. His most recent being a virtual swim across the English Channel – a 21-mile (33km) feat to raise funds for the Hastings Lifeboat Station.
“The Hastings lifeboat station is a vital part of our fishing town,” Danny explained. “Choosing to swim the very stretch of water that the lifeboat volunteers so courageously protect made this an easy decision.”
Danny set himself the incredible goal of swimming 1,400 lengths of Summerfields pool – the equivalent of the English Channel – over just three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. With determination and community support behind him, he powered through an astounding 17,275 metres on Friday alone, followed by 8,075 metres on Saturday, and a final 9,025 metres on Sunday.
It was a gruelling physical and mental test, especially with nearly nine hours in the water on the first day. But Danny’s resolve never wavered, buoyed by encouragement from fellow swimmers during training, the odd Costa coffee from the cafe and the knowledge that his effort would directly support lifesaving work.
The final stretch on Sunday was particularly special – with sunlight pouring through the windows and families enjoying the pool around him, Danny completed the last 3km surrounded by joy and laughter. “It felt wonderful,” he said.
Danny’s dedication is a shining example of how one person’s passion can ripple out to make a big difference. We’re incredibly proud to have him as a member of Freedom Leisure and wish him luck with whatever he chooses as his next physical feat.
