The festival was structured into three distinct sessions to cater to varying experience levels:

Hour 1: Beginner’s Coaching Session – Led by Alan McGill (Derbyshire Dales District Council) and Steve Edwards (Freedom Leisure), this session introduced 12 newcomers to the basics of pickleball, including equipment use, rules, and fundamental techniques. Participants then had the opportunity to engage in short, fun games to develop their skills.

Hour 2: Club Player Matches – Players from local clubs, including Hathersage, Bakewell, Winster, and Matlock, came together for friendly yet competitive matches. This provided an opportunity for individuals to test their skills against new opponents and strengthen connections within the wider pickleball community.

Hour 3: Exhibition Match – Organised by Rob Salmon (Pickleball England Derbyshire Representative), this session showcased an exhilarating match between four high-level competitive players. Spectators were treated to a demonstration of the skill and strategy involved in the sport, followed by an opportunity for club players to join in and experience the competitive level of play.

A Catalyst for Future Growth

The success of the festival has sparked enthusiasm for the formation of a new Pickleball League, enabling local clubs to arrange competitive fixtures and encouraging further participation in the sport. With accessibility at its core, pickleball continues to attract players of all ages and abilities, offering an enjoyable and social way to stay active.

Alan McGill, Club and Participation Development Officer at Derbyshire Dales District Council, commented:

“The event met all of its aims in showcasing what a fantastic and accessible sport pickleball is. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned player, there is something for everyone, and we are excited to see the sport grow in the Derbyshire Dales.”
